Pulsar 1002
The BX Pulsar 1002 is our flagship focused ultrasound neuromodulation device. This console is the “brains” of the system, containing the electronics and software that generate and control the ultrasound pulses delivered to the patient. The BX Pulsar 1002 is an integrated, all-in-one ultrasound stimulation unit – essentially a specialized computer with a built-in ultrasonic waveform generator and amplifier. It features a user-friendly interface with proprietary BrainSonix software for configuring stimulation parameters and monitoring sessions. Researchers or clinicians can select from preset pulse sequence protocols or customize parameters such as pulse width, pulse repetition frequency, duty cycle, intensity, and total sonication duration. Once the desired settings are entered, the system automatically computes the required drive voltage and other outputs to achieve those acoustic settings, taking into account the transducer’s calibration data. The console provides real-time feedback and ensures that the delivered ultrasound dose matches the prescribed values.
Transducers
Our transducers are the critical components that convert electrical signals from the console into ultrasound waves and focus them into the brain. BrainSonix transducers are single-element, air-backed spherically focused ultrasound emitters. They have a 61 mm aperture diameter and are engineered to operate at our chosen ultrasound frequency (~650 kHz) with high efficiency. We offer transducers in multiple focal lengths – approximately 35 mm, 55 mm, 65 mm, and 80 mm – which correspond to the depth at which the ultrasound waves converge into a focus. By selecting a transducer with an appropriate focal length, users can target regions at different depths in the brain: shorter focal lengths for shallower targets (e.g. cortical areas or basal ganglia near the surface) and longer focal lengths for deep targets (e.g. thalamus, amygdala, hippocampus near the center of the brain). All transducers produce a tight focal zone on the order of only a few millimeters in size, enabling very specific targeting.
Quality Assurance Tester
To support researchers and clinicians in using our system, BrainSonix provides a Quality Assurance (QA) Testerdevice. This is a companion tool that allows users to verify the output of the BX Pulsar 1002 and transducer in a quick and straightforward way, without the need for specialized laboratory equipment (like water tanks or hydrophones). The QA Tester can be thought of as a portable ultrasound measurement reference. Before a study session or at scheduled intervals, an operator can use the QA Tester to check that the transducer is delivering the expected pressure and intensity for a given set of parameters. For example, one might place the transducer against the QA Tester’s sensor, run a test pulse sequence, and confirm that the measured acoustic output matches what the console’s settings indicate.
