Our Team

Alexander Bystritsky, M.D., Ph.D.
Founder / CEO

Dr. Bystritsky has been a full Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for over 20 years and is the director of UCLA’s Anxiety Disorder Program. He is also Director of Brain Stimulation Laboratory for Anxoety. Dr. Bystritsky received his medical training and research training in neuroscience, psychopharmacololgy and psychiatry from Pavlov Medical Institute (Russia), New York University and UCLA. For his research on LIFUP Dr. Bystritsky was awarded the NARSAD (Brain and Behavior) Distinguished Investigator Award, which he performed as a visiting full professor in the Department of Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University School of Medicine. Dr. Bystritsky has won numerous Awards and published over 200 scientific papers and book chapters.

Mark Schafer, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Schafer is an internationally recognized expert in ultrasound, holds 21 patents in the field and has served in senior management roles for many early stage companies developing innovative ultrasonic devices. A serial entrepreneur, he was recently the CTO of Sound Surgical Technologies, a successful cosmetic ultrasound company. Mark holds a BSEE from MIT, and MS in Acoustics from Penn State and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University.

John Marlow
Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs

Mr. Marlow oversees business and legal affairs for BrainSonix.  He is also currently serves as Managing Director – EMEA of RingCentral, Inc., a public company (RNG: NYSE; +1B market cap), where he currently oversees the company’s international business and operations.  John’s other current and/or former titles and roles at RingCentral include General Counsel, SVP – Corporate Development and Member of the Board of Directors.  Prior to joining RingCentral, John practiced corporate and securities laws representing public and private companies, institutional and venture capital investors and emerging growth companies.

Woody Wurster
Vice President of Manufacturing

Mr. Wurster is the President & CEO of Custom Stamping Inc. a supplier of precision electronic components for over 45 years.  He is the designer, inventor and engineer of multiple electronic products and devices and holds patents for over 27 inventions, including the airbag and most recently the Brainsonix UltraSonic Navigation Device and the Brainsonix Stereotactic Head Frame. His latest design is the miniaturized light weight version which can be targeted in any direction of the brain and tilted to reach areas not possible before, to enable treatment for Alzheimers, coma, and epilepsy patients. It can be easily converted for the right or left side of the brain. Currently 3 patients have awaken out of a coma. This is first in medical history. Brainsonix was named the eighth most significant achievement of the year 2016 by Wired Magazine. Mr. Wurster is the recipient of the 2016 Innovation in Neuroscience Award for Excellence in Engineering Novel Systems for Brain Research from the International Brain Research Foundation.
